3 Cheers for Australia’s 3 million sporting volunteers

30 May 2024

The Australian sport sector came together during National Volunteer Week (NVW) to say 3 Cheers for Volunteers and thank the 3 million sport volunteers across the country.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Australian sport. They wear many hats - coaches, referees, team managers, barbecue chefs, grant writers, scorekeepers, uniform cleaners and much more.

From 20 to 26 May, sporting organisations, clubs, teams and participants united to show appreciation for these remarkable individuals who volunteer to deliver sport across the country.

This year’s campaign highlighted the diverse range of volunteers and the ways people can give back to sport, aligning with Volunteering Australia’s Something for Everyone theme.

The ASC’s resources helped the sector recognise their volunteers with social media and mainstream media platforms shining a light on the important role the cohort plays.

Sharing real-life stories of volunteers who undertake a variety of roles was a popular way to recognise the unsung heroes with people from small, local grassroots clubs to large, national high-performance events recognised.

From rugby to boxing, netball to sailing, Aussie sports across the country said 'thank you' to their volunteers.

From the Perth Scorchers Big Bash team, to the South-East Melbourne Phoenix NBL team, to regional and rural sporting clubs, there was a groundswell of support for the campaign with close to 500 posts about NVW on social media from across the sport sector.

While NVW has concluded, the ASC encourages the sporting community to continue celebrating volunteers.

The toolkit of resources is still available, and contains easy-to-use templates, key messages, posters and social media tiles.
