The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is helping sporting organisations across Australia make more environmentally sustainable choices.
To mark World Environment Day, new questions have been added to the ASC’s Game Plan platform to help educate and empower clubs and organisations to reduce their environmental footprint.
Game Plan is a free digital platform helping sporting clubs understand their current capabilities and areas of improvement, while supporting their ongoing development with a suite of tools and resources.
“The new questions aim to increase the inclusion and consideration of positive climate action as part of everyday decisions being made in sporting clubs and organisations,” Senior Game Plan Advisor Steven Marquis said.
Developed in collaboration with Sports Environment Alliance (SEA), the questions use a maturity rating to assess the operations, policies and processes of a club or organisation, and rate their environmentally sustainable actions on a scale from ‘not in place’ to ‘excelling’.
“Many clubs and sporting organisations are already seeing the impact of climate change on their sport and want to take action,” SEA CEO Jan Fitzgerald said.
“By understanding and addressing environmental impacts, sporting organisations can help protect our places to play for the future.”
Mr Marquis said clubs shouldn’t be perturbed if they receive a low maturity rating to start with.
“We expect some clubs may initially have low maturity ratings, however, Game Plan will provide these organisations with the relevant resources and support needed to drive sustainable change over time.”
Tennis Australia is one of over 2,500 organisations using Game Plan and welcomed the inclusion of sustainability questions in the online platform.
“As a mostly outdoor sport, the health of the climate in Australia is vital to our game,” Tennis Australia’s Director of Sustainability Matt Nicholas said.
“It is great to see the ASC recognise and include environmental sustainability as a level of maturity in Game Plan.”
