AIS launches new online concussion course for healthcare practitioners

24 June 2024

Healthcare practitioners across Australia will now be able to increase their knowledge about the assessment, management, and treatment of sports related concussions, thanks to a new, free online course launched by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

Available to all Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registered healthcare practitioners, the online course supports the 2024 AIS Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement, which was launched in February of this year.

The Concussion in Sport for Healthcare Practitioners online course runs for 120 minutes and is available through the Australian Sports Commission Learning Centre here.

AIS Chief Medical Officer Dr David Hughes AM and Dr Kimberley Wells discuss concussion management for Healthcare Practitioners.

The 2024 AIS Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement is the latest update of the inaugural concussion position statement launched in 2016 and brings together the most contemporary evidence-based information on concussion for athletes, parents, teachers, coaches and healthcare practitioners.

As well as new Youth and Community Sport Guidelines, which have been adopted by more than 30 sports across Australia, the 2024 position statement has specific information and resources for para and female athletes, and highlights the role of the physiotherapist in the diagnosis and management of concussion.

A series of resources, including the new Concussion in Sport for Healthcare Practitioners online course, have been recreated to support the position statement and are available on the Concussion in Australian Sport website www.concussioninsport.gov.au
