A new free online course developed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is helping sporting leaders increase diversity in their sporting organisation's leadership.
‘The Players – Board Diversity’ is the fourth course in the ASC’s governance education series with The Start Line, The Defence and The Spirit of the Game already available for current and aspiring leaders.
Central to the course is the positive impacts diversity amongst senior leaders has with better decision-making and improved performance coming from a mix of skills, perspectives and experiences.
The course is made up of six modules with a broad group of course contributors including AusTriathlon Chair Paul Stevens, indigenous leader Selwyn Button from Queensland Rugby Union and Rana Hussain from the Victorian Women’s Trust sharing their experience as directors.
“This course equips directors with the knowledge and strategies to navigate Australia’s evolving diversity and effectively reflect this in the boardroom,” Stevens said.
Other contributors include Director of Regional Sport Victoria Dan Poynton, lawyer and founder of Multicultural Women in Sport Molina Asthana, and ASC Commissioner Dr Bridie Kean PLY.
The launch of this course follows the announcement of the National Gender Equity in Sport Governance Policy which is addressing the underrepresentation of women in sports leadership.
ASC CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said the course is another example of how the ASC is helping sports improve their capability.
“The ASC is committed to creating an effective and sustainable national sport sector that benefits all Australians. When armed with the right skills and knowledge, sporting leaders can help make their organisations stronger and more successful,” he said.
On completion of the course, learners will understand the importance of diversity and inclusion in Australia, be able to identify their organisation’s needs and have a better understanding of how a diverse board can contribute to a successful organisation.
The course is free and suitable for all aspiring members of sporting boards and committees as well as those currently involved and looking to develop their governance knowledge. It takes approximately one hour to complete.
